About Us

Bexar County ESD5 Fire & Rescue was created from Southwest Volunteer Fire Department in 2011. Other volunteer departments, like Somerset VFD and Jarret VFD, were disbanded and created a vacuum that ESD5 filled. We cover 131.67 square miles and serve a population of 35,820. We have the second largest service are in the entire county, second to San Antonio Fire Department.

Chief Estep was hired in 2017 as the departments first full time chief. Since then the department has grown from 10 to 50 line personnel. Staffing a total of 3 stations with a call volume of 4103 for 2021.

Bexar County ESD5 Fire & Rescue has grown exponentially since its inception. New stations are in the works, a ladder and engine are coming in 2020, and more firefighters are needed every year!
